Boxford —Once again this year the students from Masconomet Regional Middle School and High School had an impressive showing in the regional Alliance for Young Artists and Writers competition sponsored by the Boston Globe. It is the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists.
About 100 Masconomet students were recognized for artistic achievement with more than 120 total awards. This year almost 12,000 images were submitted statewide in the various media categories created by over 6,000 individual students.
“We have consistently placed well in this competition over the years,” said Walter Meinelt, Masconomet Art Department chairman. “This success is a tribute to the talent of our students and our staff, as well as to the support we receive for the arts from the administration and local communities.”
The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards,” explained Meinelt. “The Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon and Robert Redford. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 17 categories of art for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.”
Some Masco students like Cody Arrington received multiple awards. Arrington, a junior, took home six photography awards including a prestigious Gold Key, or first place award. Senior Brielle Curvey received two Gold Key Awards, one in Mixed Media and another in Art Portfolio, along with a Silver Key for Painting and Honorable Mention in the Drawing category. Masconomet students garnered a total of 18 Gold Key Awards in just The Senior Art and Photography Portfolio category.
Sophomore Kaleigh Frampton “was blown away” when she learned she had won five Photography awards.
“The Gold Key award was a self portrait and all my photos were of my siblings. People are my favorite thing to photograph,” she said.
Samantha Knowles, senior, was equally delighted to win. “I had works entered in previous years, but this was the first time I won an award.” Knowles was recognized with a Silver Key in Design for her Typography portrait.
“We had to choose a easily recognizable famous person and then create a portrait of them using typography. I chose Albert Einstein and used number and letters to create his portrait,” she explained.
“I think that whenever our students have an opportunity to be judged in a real word setting and do well, it says a lot about Masconomet,” added Superintendent Darrell Lockwood.
Student artworks that received Gold and Silver Key Awards are part of an exhibition on display in the State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza in downtown Boston and will remain on display until Thursday, April 7.
Following the Boston exhibition, the Gold and Silver Key artwork will travel to New York for national judging and scholarship consideration.
